Today, I did not pull a card. I did not do homework. I didn’t even really prepare for work tomorrow even though it’s a new position and I’m very nervous about it. Instead of dwelling on my fears and anxieties, I took today and went for a hike at a lake near the mountains with family. If you are ever in Lehigh County Pennsylvania it will be worth your while to visit Leaser Lake. You can go fishing, kayak or sail your boat, take a hike, and have a picnic in a little slice of heaven surrounded by the hills. I definitely want a boat or a kayak now…. and I love fishing so this is for sure going to be my new favorite self care spot.
The hiking trail is about 4.2 miles around the lake and takes you through some of the most beautiful topography PA has to offer. Beautiful trees, tall grasses, and wildflowers everywhere you turn. Honeybees, butterflies and the most brilliant dragon flies flit and flutter around while an orchestra of crickets and cicadas play their late summer symphonies in perfect harmony. The peace and stunning beauty of this Pennsylvania landscape perfectly put me in the best of head spaces.
The path winds around the lake where families, friends, and couples fish from their small boats, their laughter blending perfectly with the sound of the gentle breezes blowing through the trees. Suddenly, you take a turn on the path and find yourself in a totally different world- one that is dramatically shaded, with glacier boulders and rocks strewn about, where creeks bubble and gurgle as they meander around muddy paths with old fallen trees that have replaced the green, sunny path around the lake. It is a place where it is easy to imagine the fae at play and feel magic all around you so real and so powerful you can almost touch it.
Eventually, the path took us up to the highlands, high above the lake and once again among the grass and flowers. The dragonflies are stunning this year- orange, green, blue and purple…. the bees are everywhere buzzing around along with their yellow, orange, and blue butterfly cousins, collecting the sweet nectar from the wild flowers… Today was the perfect day. Today was exactly what I needed.
Tomorrow I will be at work- I work for a local school district as a paraprofessional. The world has gone so topsy turvy that we don’t know what to expect from one day to the next anymore. Days like today are what I need to keep moving forward, to keep centered and grounded. Being in nature is like being in heaven. It is where I feel God’s presence most, where I can listen to the small still voice guide me back to where I need to be. I recommend everyone take one day a week to do what you need to do to get yourself right with yourself, right with the Divine, and grounded to your path again. The house work, school work, work-work can wait a day. If you don’t take the time to rejuvenate yourself, your energy will falter, you will begin to struggle spiritually, and eventually you will wear yourself down to the bone. So take the time to breathe. Nature is my thing- what’s yours?
