Good morning! Today’s card pull is from the Wild Unknown Archetype Deck my Kim Krans. This is a very deep and sometimes dark tarot that can also act like an Oracle. I utilize this deck of Archetypes in tandem with my larger readings. I pull one of these cards to give the Tarot reading an umbrella- an overarching theme that is resonant to the person’s life, path, or state of mind. Having pulled this card a relatively short time after yesterday’s card, Perspective, I find The Destroyer apropos to the conversation plus a little more.

The Destroyer is, without a doubt, a dark card. The title- The Destroyer- is frightening and intimidating, at least at first glance. Because of that first glance we will delve into the description that Krans wrote in her book accompanying the deck. She writes, “The Destroyer…. has necessary yet painful work to do in the world. Culturally, we have an aversion to endings. And we hang on to permanence as a signifier of success. Yet The Destroyer pulls the rug out from underneath relationships, jobs, homes, and all forms of security. It’s the part of us that wants things to end. Its painful orientation is to uncover our true purpose. The Destroyer does not let us linger long in comforts, as it knows not much happens in that realm. With its piercing eyes, it seeks out stagnancy from a distance and the rest… becomes history. In the old myths this is the moment when heads begin to roll, the ground opens up, and castles crumble. Hold on for the ride- the Destroyer has arrives” (Krans, 2019).

That is some heavy shit right there. I used the word apropos because if nothing applies to the world we are living in- this does. Our world is being undone. It is being destroyed. For good, for bad, regardless of race, creed, religion, or politics, change is happening and it is happening in a destructive and powerful way. As the paradigm shifts on the world stage, as history itself changes course, we must all own our part- whatever that part may be. Whatever we build after the last fire dies out will be our legacy to a new generation. None of us is comfortable now and it is because we have been stagnant for so long. Cognitive dissonance is at an all time high and as we fight for our self righteous opinion on the stage of social media, the world burns, and we do nothing. It is time to take the blinders off so that we can be ready for the rebuild after all is said and done.

Now, obviously there is a lot to be discerned about the world at large in this single card pull. But- the personal must never be forgotten. Endings are necessary to growth and life. The cycle goes on, flowing with divine grace: birth, life, death; birth, life, death…. It is in the middle part of this Divine cycle that we live and during our lives we experience, we grow, we change. Within these microcycles we become accustomed to our preferences. We become comfortable with the status quo. It is here where The Destroyer lurks. Perhaps you have been feeling out of sorts (I mean, we all have right now but this is personal) and you get the sense that things have to change- your life needs new people, new direction… something different. But your fear holds you back because even when things suck- jobs that suck, marriages that suck, relationships that suck, we are comfortable in the suck be we KNOW the suck. We don’t know what change will bring- will the suck just become worse? Or will the suck go away? Either way, we fear it. Sometimes, though, changes happen beyond our control, whether we like it, or want it or not and the Destroyer arises without your permission. Maybe you got fired from your shitty job and it is forcing you to reevaluate how you live your life- have you been selling yourself short in this shitty job because it’s safe? OR have you been living a large life, full of vacations and things but feel ultimately unfulfilled? Maybe your spouse came home and said the marriage is over or the fighting has gotten worse or the coldness has set in and you have no choice but to accept the change. The Destroyer has come to burn it down so that you can rebuild on sacred space, and live the life you were supposed to be living until you got so damned comfortable you forgot.

The Destroyer may not destroy your job, way of life or marriage but maybe destroy what’s broken- about you or about any thing at all, in order for them to get better- to heal. Family therapy, talking to your boss about a new idea you’d like to implement, going back to school for something you are passionate about… .so many amazing and wonderful  things can come out of the ashes after the destruction. Remember, farmers will burn fields in order to improve the health of those fields so that future crops grow strong, hearty, and healthy. The Destroyer, even though terrifying and dangerous- often uncomfortable and stressful, does that for our lives. Ultimately, it is our choice to understand the purpose of the Destroyer and work with it in order to embrace change and a redirection that will change everything for the better; or to fight it, to be unwilling to change, keep our eyes closed and everything falls apart anyway. Either way- shit falls apart. The question is if you want things to be better in aftermath or will you just allow yourself to be just another casualty?
